The New Vintage Look at Proud Cabaret

Once again I apologise for lack of posting, I have been ridiculously busy organising something rather exciting! So I hope you will all let me off when you see the reasons why!
Between my friend Sarah and myself, we've been putting together what we hope will be the start of something a little bit amazing.
The New Vintage look! A vintage inspired charity evening full of fashion, fun and frightfully good music and burlesque! Tuesday 10th April at the renowned Proud Cabaret in the heart of London.

Personally I've wanted to do this show for a good couple of years now and finally the time has come.
The New Vintage look is a fashion evening showcasing some of the best 1940s and 50s reproduction clothing companies from the UK, Sweden, and USA, these include the amazing Bernie Dexter, Vintage suits by Mary, Collectif, Heyday vintage, Miss Fortune, Lady K Loves,Playful Promises, Outerlimitz, Stockings and Romance, the Pretty dress company, Miss Bamboo,Miss Candy floss, Oh Sew Vintage, Boo boo Kitty Couture and Scarlett's Vintage attire, wowee what a selection we have for all you lovely ladies out there!
These fabulous companies will be showcased in a catwalk where the gorgeous models will also be wearing Bow and Crossbones jewellery and Razorblaid Mermade jewellery!

As well as the show, there will be burlesque from the outstanding Tempest Rose, cabaret from Alex the Mind reader and Daisy Bourne - hoop artiste

To finish the night off we will have one of the UK's top bands on the Rockin Scene - Knocksville, who have toured with Imelda May and also recently played in Europe, so remember to bring your dancing shoes because these guys will have you on your feet!

If you fancy grabbing yourself a bargain then we'll have something right up your street, a charity auction! Lots of companies have given us great prizes including two pairs of Miss L fire shoes, a dress from Tara Starlet, a hair and make up voucher from The Vanity Box, a manicure voucher from Minnie Moons as well a whole lot more, so we're hoping you'll all dig deep and help raise lots more money!

All money raised is going to the Royal Brompton and Harefield Charity to help fund a neonatal incubator to treat seriously ill babies with heart and lung defects. This charity is a very personal one to me for close members of my family have been treated there and we want to say thank you for all their support!

Tickets are £12 and are available from
When you buy a ticket you will be entered into a competition to win a pinup photo shoot worth over £250!

So what are you waiting for, please show your support with us on Tuesday 10th April and make it a night to remember!

The secret to success... It's all in the recipe!

I love going to the theatre, the formality of it all, dressing up then sitting down with a nice drink and relaxing for the evening, being away from all the troubles that go on day to day, well that's what I think anyway.
So when I heard of a 1950s inspired stage show opening at the Charing Cross theatre last week I had no excuse but to go, 50s and the theatre?! What more could this girl ask for.
Me and Sarah before the show

The show was Recipe for a Perfect Wife. A cute hour long performance Produced and written by Christina McCulloch, set in the midst of the 1950s when women were known for their housewife expertise and frankly not a lot else.

The year is 1956 and  British Television is reaching out to the masses with it's witty and charming game shows. Cue Berty Baxter (Matt Houlihan), the host of new show 'Britain's best housewife' and his wife Betty (Antonia Reid) who between them have to find the lady who treats her man like the god he apparently is, because isn't that what women loved to do during this period?  Five ladies compete to win the title of the show, while reflecting on their thoughts of when they were once happy (apparently being a housewife isn't always what it is cracked up to be). With one by one dwindling down until the winner is revealed, the 1950s version of X factor some of you might think, well yes this is correct because there's singing and dancing as well as finding out the best dish to cook your husband.

Recipe for a  Perfect wife is a non stop giggle from the start to finish, a camp parody of the stereotypical 1950s housewife and how sweet and innocent our times once were, or so you'd think. The cast seemed to be having a lot of fun through out the show with their own individual personalities from a lady of the Women's institutes to a young wife that wouldn't dare say boo to a goose. There is a strong emphasis on the quaint British accent and makes you somewhat quite proud to be British because of the delightful mannerisms this show had.

I loved the simplicity of the show, the little innuendo's that popped up here and there that made me chuckle to myself through out. The cast was a mighty small number of 10 with the characters of the game show and also the ladies who were the 'Kitty and her Cats' a three piece girl group that greeted the 'gameshow audience' with witty advertisements showing washing powder amongst other things and singing harmonies that reflect the innocent era such as Stupid Cupid and Mr Sandman.

The cast were lucky enough to have my lady friends the Vanity Box on board creating vintage inspired hair styles to help give the show that stand out feel from all the rest and boy did they do a good job, all the ladies in the show had perfectly curled do's that would have suited any show in the 50s. As for the costume, most of the dresses were made by an Islington costume designer and friend of the producers, unfortunately my only negative comment against this is that the ladies looked very similar to one another not saying that they were not nice dresses, oh no, I would certainly wear some of them! However after speaking to PR beaut Olivia Farnesy of Moon on a stick PR, I found out there is talk of having vintage retailers Beyond Retro on board for the show, I think this is a great idea  because it would give the show that bit more of nostalgia and make the individual personalities stand out that bit more.

Verity and Gemma of the Vanity Box

The show has come from  a sold out season at the Kings Head theatre straight to the Charing Cross theatre which is a cosy little place that makes you feel you are really included in the show instead of having to sit in the gods with a pair of binoculars trying to figure out which ant is which on stage. I recommend the show to anyone that wants to take a step back in time for an evening of fun and frolics from the 50s because it will have you singing along as well as dancing in your seat thanks to the London Swing Dance society who jived their way into the hearts of the audience at the beginning and end of the show.

After the show there is a 50s inspired party full of cupcakes and dancing until late so make sure you get to see it, it is running until December so get in while you can.

Too many tattoos spoil the broth

Tattoos in the 21st century have become something that isn't really that big a deal anymore and I've always been a personal lover of them as you've probably seen in many of my photos that I put up every now and again. However everyone seems to think I'm covered in them, when in all honesty, I don't think I've got that many compared to a lot of people nowadays, which got me thinking: when is enough... really enough?

My love for tattoos started many years ago, my dad's always had them and because I've always been a tad on the alternative side whether it was goth, punk, hippy (you name it I've been it) ,I've always had a soft spot for people covered in pretty pictures. I knew by the time I was 16 that I wanted a hell of a lot of them. So I started there and then getting my first one, underage and with a naff flash piece of what is a set of playing cards on the top of my right arm. When I first got it I was obsessed and wanted to show my arm off at every chance possible, but 5 years on and I've got to say it's my worst tattoo because It was just picked at random and the quality isn't all that good, but I'm quite glad it still fits in with my style and who I am and I didn't decide to have it planted right in the middle of my arm like you see so much of now.

It doesn't look that bad in pictures in all honest but close up, yuck!!

From then on, each year I pretty much got another tattoo and now I've got a whopping number of 6, my favourite of which is my half sleeve I designed myself a few years ago at college in Art history (see college was useful for me!)  and also my back piece of lilies I've got going from top to the bottom, this was the most painful one yet, because I've got quite a skinny back, I felt every needle going in and out of my skin, it wasn't nice to say the least.

My sleeve and chest tattoos
My back-nowhere near finished but it's so pretty!

Recently me and my fella were talking about what tattoos we wanted next and I said to him that I wanted to get a half sleeve (or sleeve) on my right arm to even it up with my left arm and get my back finished and possibly something on my thigh. His reaction to this was "Don't get too many more because you'll look butch". I was in shock, how could my boyfriend who always said I looked beautiful think I could look butch?!

But then I started to think about it and to a degree (only ever so slightly) he was right, even though I do love a good tat (ooh er). I think when you've got a certain look, i.e a vintage look then a lot of tattoos can be a bit too much, not saying that women look butch, because I know a lot of beautiful ladies who are covered in tattoos and they carry it off so well but I think as an individual you have to know your limits and what suits you. In Lowestoft I noticed ages ago older women walking around with lots of tattoos and they did look butch, with a picture of winnie the pooh plonked on their boob, this wasn't a good look.

The Gorgeous Cherry Dollface sporting her tattoos,

An older lady I found on google images, is this what I could turn into??

It also depends on how "vintage" you want to look, because most enthusiasts are never going to be something that stepped out of a time machine because they are still using their modern technology such as the Internet and mobile phones, so in that respect tattoos work OK to a degree. I guess it all depends on who you are as a person and how  you perceive them. I like to think that I won't look butch because my tattoos are suited to my lifestyle and I've actually thought about where I want them, who I want them done by etc etc. I think some people in older generations possibly didn't think as much about what tattoos they wanted years ago and there was less choice, lower quality equipment blah blah and that was quite possibly why they were looked upon badly and now why some women appear 'butch'. I'm quite a philosopher when I put my mind to it, well so I like to think.

After all this I say I'm not going to get many more, I definitely want a half sleeve, it's just finding the pennies to do it. But knowing me I'll probably go against myself and end up being covered head to foot, now that'll be a good look...

Rave today gone tomorrow

I've just returned from the 15th Anniversary Rockabilly Rave, I cannot believe how quick it's been and gone, unfortunately I thought it wasn't one of the best, it had a strange ol' kind of atmosphere going on, not to say that I didn't enjoy it, it was the Rave of course I did! But it was just a bit flat for me I think, but never mind I had a lot to drink, spent far too much money on clothes and burgers and overall had a giggle!  Here's a few pics of the outfits I wore over the few days

Wearing my vintage Hawaiian sarong dress with friends Graham and Julie, this dress
I bought at Hemsby a couple of years ago and was a bit of a tight squeeze, pity it didn't bring the sunshine out! I thought my flask matched quite well though don't you think?
Vintage one shouldered Aqua embroidered dress made from what looks to be Sari fabric with my fella,
we didn't mean to be matching but I think he scrubs up well when he wants to!  When I first bought this dress it was in a sorry state and also nearly was again when the shoulder ripped so I had to change quick!

Sunday night with the ladies wearing my vintage green halterneck
pencil dress and matching jacket, completely a play it safe outfit for me!

Unfortunately I didn't get to see a lot of the bands because I was too busy eating most of the times or shopping, yes I'll say shopping that's what us girls do! But the bands I did see were super, The Rhythm Shakers on Thursday night probably would have to be the top one of the weekend for me, I've loved these guys and girls for a while now and the rave was the first time I had got to see them, the rest of the wild records artists topped the bill on the Sunday night to a great response from the crowd and of course Saturday showed us the Inferno's( my all time favourite band!) and The Bellfuries who I had doubts about because they only played the rave last year but they blew us away again, the singers voice still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end!
I managed to pick up a few bits and bobs over the weekend including another pair of Capri pants in a beautiful aqua colour... I have 9 pairs now!! I will be able to stop wearing my jeans soon! A lovely printed circle skirt from the Car boot... Yes I managed to get up for the car boot, the first weekend in god knows how many years but I did it! Unfortunately everyone else had the same idea so it was heaving but I came away with my skirt so I was content when I went back to bed. I also bought a vintage white jewellery set and black beaded sweater, good weekend buys I'd say!
I generally had a blast this weekend spending time with close friends and making new ones.
I apologise for this post being a bit short and is a general overview, I'm finding it quite difficult to get motivated at the moment so am running low on ideas but as soon as I get one you lot will be in for a treat!

Kicking the summer off with some snaps

I came back to Lowestoft on Wednesday for three whole months, in this time I'm meant to get a head start on my dissertation, figure out what I want to do for my FMP, work and have a social life? How this is going to happen is beyond me. But I thought I'd start the holiday off with a little photo shoot on Thursday evening, it was at a place called Baconthorpe castle near Cromer, I'd never even heard of this and I've lived in the area all my life, sheltered life maybe? I found out it was going to be a group shoot with six photographers and three models so I was quite excited, but I also found out it was castle ruins not exactly a castle so I was a bit wary of how "Pin up" would work, but I got myself ready and away I went.
Here are some images from the group of photographers I worked with:
This was by Mark Whitmore, I think it looks quite moody and mysterious,
even if I do look a bit young!

Love this by Andy Robinson!
Doesn't look like the average pin up and in
my comfy clothes too!
Love the vintage feel this one has to it by Andy Robinson!
I seemed to stay in this part of the ruins most of the shoot which I was a tad disappointed about because there were so many other parts to explore!
I adore this shot by Lynton Smith, the cropping of it is just amazing!

A shot by David Abbott, love the composition again, even though I was very uncomfortable
in rather tight Capri pants!!

And last but not least a finishing shot by Dean Mitchell
the angle is just so clever and like Dean said to me "this is my castle and what"
A fantastic shoot with a lovely bunch of photographers where I got some great shots for my portfolio I think!
The majority of the outfits I wore for this shoot are vintage minus the black Capri pants which were from
Freddies of Pinewood, a fab repro jeans company, check them out!
I hope to go back to Baconthorpe to do more of a darker gothic shoot because I think the location is more suitable to that rather then Pin up! So keep your eyes peeled

1950s pin up girls ... At Hemsby!

So this time last weekend I was finishing Hemsby 46 off with a bang, what a blast it was, apart from managing to drink practically a bottle of Sailor J's to myself on the first night and it reappearing the next morning which I have to say, I don't intend on doing until the next one at least... But Yes it was a superb weekend. Hemsby is like a home from home to me, I've been going since no. 39 and each time is different because of the people, the bands and the atmosphere.
This time was just as great as the last 8 (oh my gosh has it really been that many!!) I have been to. I cannot tell you how nice it was to catch up with friends I hadn't seen in what seemed like forever! I'm not going to go in depth about it all because frankly 1. I don't want to bore you all with a review of every single band I saw and 2. Most of it has just become a blur now like most weekenders tend to do after a while!
But a few highlights for me were: turning up on the Thursday to see my face all over the Hemsby 47 flyer!(that's right Octobers weekend!)
Photography by Dominic Fenn
Now I've been published in a few magazines and I've never really seen it as a wow factor but this was something quite surreal because my face was EVERYWHERE!!! on every table, on every windowsill, on stalls, my gosh! But a massive thank you to the fabulous Andy Brittan who asked me if he could do this, because he wanted someone different on the cover!
Apparently he wants to do this with each pin up contest winner, which I think is such a great idea! It'll give a lot of girls more publicity!
Which leads me onto my second highlight of the weekend
Judging the 2011 Hemsby/Outerlimitz Pin up Contest!
Because of winning the first ever one last year (yes a whole year, can you believe it??) I had the great pleasure of being one of the judges for this years contest, alongside the gorgeous and lovely Miss Jessica Orbit  , singer of Jessie and the Orbits and a fantastic model, Julie Cooper of Big Girl's Blouse and Mr Levi Dexter himself (for those of you don't know, Bernie Dexter's singer husband! and a truly lovely man!)
What a fabulous judging panel wouldn't you say, it was a great honour to be beside these lovelies on the comfy sofas watching some stunners strut their stuff! I tell you what those girls sure had some balls, I remember doing it last year and how scary it was, so I made sure I gave the girls some encouragement before they went on, according to Di from Outerlimitz  it was really appreciated which is nice to hear!!
Of course I made sure I had bought a brand new (well brand new vintage that is) dress for the occasion, every girl needs a Saturday night dress at a weekender and I made sure I had that, a summery, green and white Hawaiian 1960s maxi dress, rather special some of you might say, I would have to say that too!
Julie, Myself and Bernie all looking rather Flowery (Bernie in her Scarlett dress  she named after me)But back to the girls of the contest, it really was hard to choose the winner but eventually after seeing 9 girls prance around the stage showing their perfectly pin up poses the winner was to be Pip Love, a true vintage fanatic and a super girl! With two runners up being Miss Cherrie Mae and Carrie Hope (a little pin  up in the making I think).

Don't they look brilliant? (Photo's courtesy of Ruth Archer, I hope you don't mind me pinching these few)
Bernie, Miss Hemsby 2011 and me (Miss Hemsby 2010 hehe)

A super way to get Saturday night started I'd say!
The rest of the weekend was just amazing, one of the most famous modern day pin ups graced us with her presence and that would be of course
Bernie Dexter, it was so nice to see her, I did get to spend some time with her and Levi over the weekend and it was lovely having a chat about everything from modelling to swollen feet and barfing alcohol (see the famous ones do it too!!)

Me, Bernie and Miss Stefani Jay, another great gal!!
I did notice this year there was a very strong pin up vibe through out the weekend, with a lot of other models I know off face book, model mayhem etc turning up, which is great to see because it's obviously getting them involved in the rockabilly scene which can only be a good thing! A lot of these girls are true beaut's and it was so nice for even one of them (Ronnie) to come up and say hello because she was following me on face book!! Yes a little claim to fame there!! So for any of you vintage girls who want to know what the rockin scene is all about and to have a great weekend, take a trip on down to Hemsby in October where you'll see me staggering around or hogging the dance floor, and of course my mush on the programme.. You know I'm honestly surprised I didn't see one on a dart board or with a mustache drawn on! Heaven forbid!
But for now I'll leave you with a image from Thursday night events,
a girl, a bike, and a whole lot of rum ...
Until Next Time

J'adore Dior!!! (And the lovely Mr Galliano)

Couture Fashion week has been happening in Paris this week, everyone in the fashion world is going mad  for the up and coming Autumn/Winter 2011 collections, men's fashion week has been and gone and now the creme de la creme of Fashion have been presenting their pieces they have been working on since last season, their pieces that they have worked their blood, sweat, and tears into, to show to the highest of highest, the richest of richest, the garments that I can only talk about and dream that maybe one day  I too could hold a couture gown in my hands, well in my dreams anyway.
There is one designer that I have always been smitten with, this is probably due to him starting off one of the most famous looks of the 20th century, yes Christian Dior, unfortunately he only led a short life in the glamorous world of fashion but he certainly made everyone sit up and take notice and thank god he did because it would truly not have been the same without him!
Since 1996 John Galliano has been designing for Dior and has been keeping the label alive ever since, which leads me onto his Spring/Summer collection of 2011.
Galliano has always been known for looking back to Christian Dior's past collections during the fifties and this collection really shows a true love for the man that took the world by storm at this time. It couldn't come at a better time with the Rene Gruau exhibition coming to a close in London, Rene Gruau was famous for creating  Dior's fashion illustrations from the the 1947 Miss Dior Perfume advert to through out the fifties.

This collection takes inspiration from Gruau who was a close friend to Dior in this collection, using a selection of tones and shades from his colour palette with bold reds and slick blacks to match the way Gruau's way of painting, which was also represented in the models make up,  it shows Galliano's love for the era recreating the famous hourglass essence with fifties influenced ball gowns and empowering pencil suits, all beautifully embroidered by only the finest atelier's. Dior's couture show is always about going back to the roots and this has gone back to the very seed of Dior with elegance from the hair style's of the models which is also spot on for the collection instead of giving it a contemporary nudge, this show had to have authenticity or It wouldn't have worked. It has been my favourite show out of this season so far. Here are a few of my favourite garments.

A walking illustration with the gliding black lines of the jacket
creating an hourglass shape to the outfit
The famous Red pleated circle skirt used as a contrast to the monochrome
palette.

A fiery evening gown with sultry Jane Russell styled make up
This outfit just oozes power! The pose, the expression, it is clear that Galliano wanted
female domination!

Belle of the ball! This somehow reminds me of Belle from Beauty and the Beast?
This dress is classic 50s prom dress and the detailing in the skirt is incredible.
Little girls dream of trying dresses like this on when their older, I'm now older and
I am dreaming of wearing it.

The different tones of grey work so well together in this outfit
Very sixties influenced with the style of dress, the embroidery sends me towards
Japan and their people with the way they stitch cherry blossom into a tapestry.

This is my favourite out of all the collection, These images are a bit scrambled I do apologise
The dress is spot on, the netting makes the dress come from something so simply designed
to something extravagant with icicle blues and the models Porcelain complexion gives it that classic
fifties look, something you would expect Diana Dors to wear.

This collection is a stand out from the rest and Dior would be proud
Until Next Time

Bettina Scarlett styling Miss Dollface Darling

So here I am again, making yet another apology because I've fell behind on my blog! How terrible! I really cant be doing this can I, but as I've just started this one, I have just had a few more light bulbs light up in that little brain of mine so hopefully I'll keep going for a bit! Being back at university really is taking its toll. On my course we've been thrown in the deep end with a creative styling project which is great as over the summer I had a bit more experience in styling a photoshoot for my beautiful friend Dollface Darling.
If you remember from past posts me and Dollface got on like a house on fire at a photoshoot we did at the East Anglian transport museum so as I was looking for some styling experience I tagged along to a photoshoot her and the delightful Dominic Fenn had at the beginning of September, here are a few of my fave shots! All of which are unedited.
I loved this idea of Dominic taking the photo over Dollface when she is surrounded by sweets
Originally Dollface's idea was a cupcake shoot with her baking cakes etc so when she told me I started researching a few kitsch ideas and as I still worked in my delightful seaside cafe I managed to pick up lots of goodies! including rainbow sticks of rock, windmills, a hulahoop and lollies! So we were going off the subject a bit but I think the images were really successful, Dollface brought a selection of outfits so I picked what went with what including accessories I'd brought along and gave her my thoughts on how she should do her eye make up and hair .
How much can you do with a hula hoop? Well we were limited but Dollface managed to work with it very well and this is one of my favourite shots

I got inspiration for this image from a vintage photograph of the fifties of a lady with a hulahoop, I can't find the image now which has annoyed me because I would of liked to show my references
Final two images with the windmills, the colours worked really well with what Dollface was wearing, I chose well even if I do say so myself!

Salute to the 40s... in Chatham?!?!

Last year when I'd first moved down to the glorious area of which is Kent, I found a 40s event at a place called Chatham dockyard, I didn't know anything about the event then and I wanted to go dreadfully! But having only just moved, I hadn't made many friends so I had to give it a miss. When I found out they were doing it again this year I was thrilled and even better I had my man to take me there too! I checked out the website and found out it was 70 years since Dunkirk so it was also a remembrance as well as a jolly good day out!

So off we went just after midday, I'd dolled myself up to the nines wearing my brand new Vivien of Holloway turquoise pencil dress and Hawaiian wedges, which after my man getting us lost and taking us on a tour of Chatham it seemed, my feet were lets say a bit on the sore side. However this did not put my spirits down and when we got there I felt like a little girl at Christmas!
I didn't quite know what to expect as Chatham's not got the most going on but as I walked down to the main event it was fantastic to see everyone in original  40s clothing and in world war 2 uniforms, including police, army, firemen. Oh it was magnificent! Everyone was so friendly and looked like they were having the time of their lives! I was a bit nervous at first thinking I'd over dressed, how wrong I was! I felt under dressed in the end. Ladies in beautiful tea dresses and Dior inspired suits and hats, men in double breasted suits or sailor outfits.

Every girl's gotta have a man in the army..or two
Four lovely ladies lookin good!
Every now and then I had the urge to have my photograph taken with a plane or with a car ( as you do!) and as my man was taking my photograph,I noticed other people doing it as well, how nice of them! I guessed from this event people put on their glad rags here and love to have their picture taken so I let them snap away!
My favourites from the day, opposite from each other but just as good

There was live music from singers and bands, I only caught a few of them, two of my favourites were a t-chest bass blues band who did a lot of Elvis, of which I was happy to hear! Don't get me wrong I adore forties music but it was still a delight to hear my favourite! And also a very Andrew sisters inspired girl group who were just fabulous, they had the look down to a tee and their voices were just gorgeous!
I gave out a few business cards hoping for some work to come my way, but if it doesn't I don't mind, there was a few stalls to buy clothes from and of course there was the Best of British magazine there so I made sure I got myself a couple of copies of that magazine, there was a woman making hand made snoods too so after treating myself to a pretty one on eBay I made sure I got myself another so I have a choice now! I'm still trying to get the hang of wearing them at the moment, because when I try it on, I seem to look more like a dinner lady then a forties starlet, better keep practising I say!  I also had to stay away from a lovely vintage dress that caught my eye, it was a beauty but I thought I'd better not!

Some lovely ladies getting their hair styled
Do you know I could actually go on about this day forever, when I was walking home I kept saying to my man how I'd had such a good time and I honestly did, being a fifties girl I was a bit wary that I would get fed up with a day of the forties but how wrong I was! I definitely could tell a difference between the 1940's scene and the rockin scene. There is a lot more drinking involved in the 50s scene and the music where as 40s is more about the clothes and dancing, which to me is still just as good, I loved watching the couples lindyhopping and would love to do it myself but I'll just stick to my jiving, I can do that, I think I'd trip over my own feet and that would not look good!

So after a long ole day we retired back to my house to go get ready to go out in the evening. A long day of glorious 40s music, dancing and great people.
I'll be reporting on the London tattoo convention over the next few days so keep your eyes peeled
 Until then

In rememberance to people who lost their lives in the war
